Mumbai, May 21: The Mumbai Indians enjoyed a season of wild endeavours during the 2026 Indian Premier League and captain Hardik Pandya is in yet another eye of the storm. As the five-time champions lose all hope of making a playoff spot, questions over the franchise’s management, form and future path are intensifying.
BCCI Suspends Pandya After KKR Clash
It was in this context that the behaviour of Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in Match 65 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, needed to be reviewed as he was reprimanded by the BCCI. The all-rounder was charged under Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and was fined 10% of his match fee, along with a demerit point. The incident took place on the fourth ball of the 10th over when a clearly frustrated Pandya, returning to his mark after bowling a delivery, “abused” cricket equipment by striking the bails off the stumps in IPL parlance. Pandya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction without challenge.
The incident put MI’s season in a very sad manner. Choosing to bowl first, KKR gave MI a mere 147/8. Pandya did return to the lineup, accompanied by Suryakumar Yadav but the visitors could only muster a score that was far from par, and MI are already out of contention.
A Season of Struggles
MI captain has collected 146 runs in eight games this season at an average of 19.25 with a strike-rate of 136.44, without hitting a half-century. With the ball, he has taken four wickets conceding runs at an economy rate of 11.90.
On top of that, in MI’s KKR match, Pandya and Tilak Varma batted at No. 5 and No. 6 with partnerships of 26 off 27 (Pandya) and 20 off 32 (Varma), both the worst SRs ever (by balls faced) for each position in IPL history.
Injury Absence and Deputy Leadership
Pandya’s campaign too was punctuated by injury issues. MI all-rounder Shardul Thakur confirmed that Pandya missed few matches due to his injury. “”Hardik was injured so he could not travel for two three games,” Thakur said, establishing Pandya’s presence in Raipur for the RCB match on May 10 but unable to play. With Pandya missing, Suryakumar Yadav (vice-captain) and Jasprit Bumrah were in charge.
Background of Captaincy and About Rohit Era
The 19th season of the Mumbai Indians franchise, which play in the Indian Premier League is its 2026 season and sees Hardik Pandya remain as captain and Mahela Jayawardene take on head coach duties. Before the 2024 season, Pandya took over from legendry Rohit Sharma as captain. The franchise first retained Rohit in 2011 and handed him leadership duties in 2013, managing five IPL titles before Pandya took over as captain. Wikipediagulfnews
MI did complete the league stage in one of the four playoff spots in 2025 under Pandya’s captaincy to confirm his tactical credentials. The campaign for 2026 has, however, represented a massive regression.
Indian stars unable to do anything special.
They are almost completely out of the tournament, reflected in their ranking on the points table with Mumbai Indians struggling as a combination through IPL 2026. Pandya himself admitted after the defeat to KKR that his side was “20 short,” and said that they struggled to be able to score sufficient runs on tricky wickets.
What’s Next for MI?
Elimination is confirmed and with just pride to play for in their remaining fixtures, all eyes are on whether the franchise will now make leadership changes before the next auction cycle. For MI the 3 years have been disappointing in a row and Pandya’s leadership future would perhaps come under serious scrutiny.
At this point in time, the mighty Mumbai Indians is going through a tough transition with allegations towards the captain’s form, fitness and temperament from fans and critics alike.
