The construction of the stadium started in 1970 with backing from the Government of Karnataka. It witnessed its first First- Class match during the 1972–73 season, and became a Test centre in the year 1974-75 when it staged a Test between India and West Indies. Development & Safety
11 people were killed and a number of others injured when the crowd stampeded during a post-IPL celebration in June 2025, prompting authorities to say that the stadium was unsafe for large crowds pending safety upgrades. Several ICC matches and major tournaments were shifted.
