Weeks earlier it was the South African ODI captain Quinton de Kock’s heroics on his return to the Mumbai Indians XI, having sculpted a sensational hundred before Mayank Agarwal led the chase of 196 with 21 balls remaining, that might have garnered all the attention as Punjab Kings stayed unbeaten five matches into the IPL 2026 season. Historic century, a textbook on bowling and a clinical display of power hitting — it had everything that night but ultimately Punjab Kings were too good for Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians Innings: 195/6 (20 overs)
Rohit Sharma was missing from the starting eleven of the Mumbai Indians, looking on as old faithful Quinton de Kock returned to take his place after having sustained what looked like a hamstring injury in their last game. The South African wicketkeeper made his return with a bang.
Quinton de Kock’s 112 off just 60 balls made him only the third batter to score a ton in the IPL for three different franchises. Gets good support in return from an 81 not out by promoted Naman Dhir, who gets his half-century in just over five overs. But the other MI batsmen failed to make a real contribution.
And when the ball was reversing, Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh produced great yorkers at the death, conceding just eight and nine runs respectively in overs 18 and 19. Seventy of those came in the last eight overs and Dhir was saying at the innings break that MI were 20 runs light.
Match report: Arshdeep Singh 3-22 (4) Queens XI Punjab take a lethal powerplay by dispatching Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav in 30 balls
Punjab Kings Score: 198/3 (16.3 overs)
Allah Ghazanfar gave MI a glimmer of hope with two-wicket in widely varying conditions in his eight overs denuding a typically exuberant PBKS chase down to size after he had sent back Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly but Prabhsimran Singh and Iyer never allowed MI into this game.
Prabhsimran remained not out on 80 runs off 39 balls, which takes his IPL 2026 score to an astounding 211 runs of just 122 balls. This was the first time he had ended up on the winning side of a successful IPL chase without getting out. Captain Iyer was equally important with 66 runs in 35 balls — his third of the season already — marking a boundary from his first ball after MI had clinched a couple of quick wickets.
Player of the Match: Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep had played four games before this one where he had only two wickets and an economy of 10.6, but the conditions — swinging ball at MI’s two left-handed openers — were perfect for him. The new ball helped swing in the air and turn off the pitch, and he beat the bat three times from Ryan Rickelton as early as his first over. He deservedly picked up the Player of the Match award.
Among other things, this match also saw Arshdeep pick the 100th IPL wicket of his career — but how fitting was it that he achieved this landmark on a day like this.
Standings Impact
Mumbai Indians came to only one win in this season with four consecutive defeats from five matches while Punjab Kings maintained their unbeaten record having played five. As a result Punjab Kings climbed to the top of IPL 2026 points table while Mumbai Indians desperately needed a turnaround.
