Historical Background

New structural stadium, called Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera), built in early 1980s was the original venue of test match which was played against West Indies in the year 1983. The first ODI to be played at the ground was in 1984.

The old building was torn down in 2015 as part of a redevelopment project to construct what is now the world’s largest cricket stadium. The reconstruction was finished between 2015 and 2020. The new stadium, which was built in 2020 and re-christened Narendra Modi Stadium in 2021.
